We have facilitated interactions by helping people to understand the lyrics of some Soca songs, helping them to be conscious of the customs, to seize the language and also by helping them organize their travel or carnival trip.

“We are always happy to see others making connections and getting the most of their travel throughout the region”

_How are the FSL received when travelling abroad?

“WOOOW”. The federative energy is always welcomed. We bring the vibe as they say and it is contagious. We are now recognized and requested. We have lived some amazing experiences, we have created some meaningful connections and we are proud of it. We are always pleased to bumped into our friends from abroad during carnivals, fetes or festivals.

_What kind of connections do you have with the artistic world abroad?

First, we have developed some links with quite a few artists as fans, then we were able to link up more as party or event promoters or collaborators.

They have also set up some Caribbean concepts in Martinique, Guadeloupe or even France in which some Soca artists performed: WAC Picasso Party, Jab Jab Party, Private Caribbean Cruise, CariBrunch, Soca in Paris just to name a few.

_Do you connect professionally with people from the industry for partnerships or collaborations?

Yes of course! Collaborations or partnerships ( events, mas bands, festivals) around the world. From the Caribbean to the United States, including France and Europe.

For instance, before COVID-19 we exchanged with an Asian organization. We had some very nice opportunities presented to us and also to our deejays.

Dankers from Guadeloupe and Payou from Martinique are very eclectic deejays furthermore they are recognized as Soca Specialists. They represent us internationally: France, USA, Canada, Dubaï…

There is also Dj Karlito, very active and close to the Carnival Festivities in Martinique.

Our main goal being to put forward our regions, we must also bring out our talents and our expertise. We commute: we travel with some products from Guadeloupe or Martinique in order to show them to the world.

_What is your vision of Soca music in France and in the French Caribbean?

Today, Patrice Roberts has several hits in rotation in the radio in the French Caribbean. Swappi, KES, GBM, Wetty Beatz, Bunji Garlin, are played in the radio whereas a few years ago when you said the word Soca, people were only seeing Machel Montano (when they actually knew about soca music).

“We come from a long way… a very long way”

KERWIN DUBOIS

For France on the other hand, it took a bit more time to show up (which is normal) but there is a soca scene now.

Soca music is a niche when it comes to marketing, it remains pretty difficult to integrate it into the vast musical universe of France.

Some work was really put in and we are proud to have strongly contributed to it. We do not regret having worked so much or even investing in this community.

_How do you keep in touch with your members and network during COVID-19?

FSL: This COVID time is not easy to deal with for a lot of us. Soca music and carnivals have this therapeutical effect, and some totally ignore it.

In order to keep the joy alive, we organized some live Soca music session with Deejays on social medias.

For some, the occasion was good to take a little rest, since we travel pretty often. We are opened to discussion and we love talking about any subject via our socials.

The French Soca Lovers are among the instigators that deeply endeavor unity in the region. From the beginning their appetite for acknowledgement is what made them all in for sharing and spreading.

I think the creation of my own label « Buddham Jazz » in 2019 is one of the thing I’m really proud of.

At that time, I was supposed to release « Soley » on ACT Music, a pretty good German label for jazz music. I had already released « Family Tree » with them in 2016. But « Soley » was really different from this album since there were more electronic sounds, singing parts, and it was not the sound of a traditional piano trio, so they didn’t like it. They wanted me to change my music. So I quit this label because it was like selling my soul.

LAURA PRICE, Peace of Mine

This project is the first one where I stand as musical director. I enjoyed to play this role as Laura is a really good musician and singer, and she as pretty good compositions too. So I gathered the team for this project, prepared the music for 5 musicians, booked the studio, wrote a string quartet arrangement for 3 songs, and I tried to fit in the vision of Laura.

It was a really good experience !

Yes, EDS. is one of the first collaboration I did ! Actually I was still living in Martinique at that time. I’m not really aware of the urban trends now, but I think I want to make that kind of collaboration in the future, to try new experiences, meet new artists who are not in the fields of jazz music, and see what happen.

MUSICAL INFLUENCES & CARIBBEAN HERITAGE

Because of my Caribbean heritage and musical influences I gravitate towards a number of genres, which you can hear in my music. I consider myself to be more of an international artist, although I am a balladeers at heart, you can hear musical influences such as reggae, r&b, pop, and soul in my work.

YOU ARE MY WORLD

My writing has evolved tremendously through practice and consistence. I have honed my skills to the point where I can now open up and be totally vulnerable through my music and still have the ability to switch it up and keep my topics very light and fun. I have also been doing a lot of writing collaborations, which is something I never did in the past. I am continuously striving to challenge myself.

First off the release of my new single “Always Love You”. Also the placement of my new music in some unreleased movies and series that cannot be named at this time.

To date, I’ve made several appearances on film, some repeat roles. Green Leaf, Bobby Brown’s life story, The Resident, The Gifted, just to name a few, and a few other series that can’t be mentioned at the moment. Presently working towards securing leading roles in 2019/2020.

Age Of Truth

Age Of Truth speaks about the truth of the matters we face today. The reason and the ultimate resolution. “Fighting for commodity while they gain power. The rich benefits while the poor man suffer. But when the day comes and the tables turn. The walls of Babylon will surely burn. “For all the wrong doing there will be a consequence.”

https://medium.com/media/52d557526ab9062d5f35432c70db3f72/href

The most uplifting would have to be the way how music can brake down barriers and unite people. My father always say music is a universal language and I’ve witnessed this at the age of 13 while touring-Seeing him as the artiste Max Romeo in his element. This was my first time being exposed to roots reggae music at an international level. The most rewarding, when you’ve just step out of the vocal booth, press play and the song sounds exactly how you imagine it would. In my opinion, the less interesting thing is image.

It is not about how you look, it’s about how you sound.

Roots Reggae, Modern Reggae and Dancehall

They are all apart of one culture, the Jamaican culture. As you may know my father is a roots reggae icon and I am a huge fan of his ever-growing catalogue. His music played a vital role in my development, it continues to do so.

The Progeny Mixtape

This may be the reason I have a special love for roots reggae. Currently, my first ever mixtape “The Progeny” is about to take the airwaves for my fans who have been loyal and patient towards my music.

But on my upcoming debut album which is coming out next year summer 2019 you will hear a more versatile side of Azizzi Romeo. It is still in the mixing lab and it is sounding greater day by day. I am really optimistic about this because I basically did all the important work in production.

I write my songs. I produce them, and I’ve recently started to mix them myself. I believe in talent over hype. When you listen my music it gives you a conscious meditation with a blend of melodies. My biggest strength is social commentary and heartbreak songs.

“It’s my choice (…) I grow my dread (…) the Rastafari way…”

Being affiliated with Rastafari is perceived as unattractive, nasty and demonic by many classist individuals in this society. Grow My Dread was my expression on this matter and a declaration that I am proud and bound to be a Rastaman.

– As a young artist in the business, do you have dreams?

At this point in my life I am making a dream a day to day reality. Which is to be recording a song everyday. Sometimes even two or more. Music can never be too much. I’m a producer as well so I would love to work with other musicians and artiste as time past. There are a lot of dreams going through my head, some are personal.

My Influences

From yesterday are all the ones that stood out against injustice in all forms and on all levels, the ones that stood for love, all the ones that stood for the people, the ones that stood for Culture and my influences of today are all the Ones standing for the same cause working towards similar or a greater objective.

Sound System

I have a lot of favorite sound systems but if I was to single out one it would have to be King Jammy’s Super Power from Water House.

Growing up as a likkle girl in Hermitage there was a small sound system in my yard that my cousin use to own and operate, this was what created the first fascination of such a great invention and growing up in Jamaica overall where this is our culture I fell in love the first time heard and felt the Baseline and the rest is history which made way for I to pen the song “Sound System”. What I admire most about the sound system is that is a tool that can amplify positive vibes and send vibrations across the seas and over the mountains spreading the culture like wild fire ingnighting the world.

My experience being apart of the project Havana Meets Kingston by Jake Savona is a joyous one. Jake saw me and and the other members of the Lineage Family performing at weekly culture event called Dub school and invited us to be apart of the project, a couple of days later we linked up with him and he told us about the project and we proceeded. The concept was fresh, Cuban and Jamaican music combined with the music being played by legendary musicians form both countries and to top it off with some talented young artist spitting conscious lyrics.

“I BLEND DIFFERENT TYPE OF GENRES TOGETHER TO CREATE MY OWN SOUND”

I am a singer, songwriter with some acting aspirations. I enjoy the entire creative process of the entertainment industry and take pride in being involved in the full process. This includes writing, recording, and performing my creations.

#GENREFLUID

K’CONEIL — Genrefluid is a concept that me and my manager came up with that truly defines my music and has evolved into a movement and a brand. We define it as “the ability to float in and out of different genres, in an attempt to create a palette of sonic perfection.” Its basically encouraging the release of artistry and the support of creativity. It’s our way of not being bogged down by stereotypes and peoples attempts to put you in boxes. These labels and boxes is a way of limiting ones. potential or creativity and hence your heights. I’m trying to promote this message in my merchandise on my websites, www.kconeilmusic.com and www.genrefluid.com Will it be the title of my first album? I doubt that, but the music will definitely be in that vein.

LOVE / LUST EP HITS BILBOARD CHARTS

K’CONEIL — LOVE / LUST EP

Buy On iTunes

K’CONEIL — I’ve had so many notable moments in my short career thus far. My Lovelust EP debuting at number 20 on the Billboard Reggae chart and number 10 on iTunes reggae charts is by far my biggest achievement to date. I have being blessed with several number one rankings for different songs off the EP but none top those two achievements for me.

MY INFLUENCES

K’CONEIL — I grew up in a singing household where we went to church every week and I started singing there. Gospel music was instrumental in teaching me how to sing with soul and to connect from the heart. There’s nothing like singing to and for a higher power that you cant see but believe in. I take that same approach in my delivery and try to convert my audience into believers by using lyrics, melodies, and tones to touch their hearts.

Outside of the church, I was and am still a big fan of Soul and RnB music ; So guys like R Kelly, Babyface, Brian McKnight captivated me early with their writing and singing styles. SInging their songs at an early age really helped me to develop my early admirers and helped me in the girlfriend department, too.

“I fell in love with that sound”

Beres Hammond is also another one of my influences, for his tone and command of his lower registry that pushed me to experiment with and try to develop mine. .Beenie man, may be my all time favorite artist because of his ability to masterfully handle any audience during a performance.

MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

Mainstream could compare you to Usher, Kranium, OMI…but you probably don’t like to be put in a box so tell me about your secret sauce..

K’CONEIL — Comparisons in this business are inevitable, fortunately these comparisons put me in good company as these are all artists I actually like and respect and are successful in their own right. It means my music is probably being received favorably and for that I’m grateful. However, I would like to think that I have developed my own “Genrefluid” sound in which I blend different types of genres together to create my own sound.

“Unfortunately I can’t tell you the sauce… as you stated it is secret so I want to keep it that way lol.”

THE ISLAND BOY IN ME

My fan base is growing daily in the US as well as Jamaica and the greater Caribbean. The island boy in me will always be in my music and adds a lot of the spice in that secret sauce that you mentioned earlier. That element I hope will make me endearing to my Caribbean fans and as I continue to release more music, I look forward to bringing my performances to these Island shores and convert the lovely people into fans.

LOVE HOW YOU WHINE

Tell us more about your song and video with Kreesha Turner? How you met and how it happened?

K’CONEIL — I met Kreesha Turner a couple years ago when we performed on New York’s Radio Station Hot 97 On The Reggae and Soca Tip show and we basically kept in contact ever since. Due to our schedules we never got the chance to work on any music. However, when I recorded this track. “Love How You Whine” the producer Troyton Remi made the suggestion to add a female to the record and Kreesha instantly came to mind. We sent it to Kreesha and she didn’t hesitate to say yes. Kreesha flew to NY the following week and we got in the studio and knocked it out in one night and the rest is history. The song is really about appreciating the cultural gyration of our women that we call ..Whining and how this phenom impresses itself on men worldwide. Its an art that I feel compelled to highlight and encourage, if you know what I mean (sic).

F.W.I & I

Have you ever visited or played in the French West Indies, Martinique, Guadeloupe, St Martin, French Guina to name a few? Could it happen?

K’CONEIL — Unfortunately I haven’t but I am definitely looking forward to it in the near future. I hear French is the language of love so I’m anxious to bring the Love/Lust experience to these shores. Promoters feel free to reach out at www.kconeilmusic.com.

I actually don’t know any French Caribbean artist personally but I’ve heard some of Sweet Mickey’s stuff. but I will go look up some after this interview and get familiar :).

“I embrace the opportunity for a feature with any artist that I think is dope and if it make sense and the song is a winner im all in!!”

RNB, Reggae, Dancehall.. Soca or Zouk soon? 😁 Any preference?

K’CONEIL — To be honest I feel comfortable in all genres but the one I am least comfortable in would be soca. My preference is rnb soul music as that’s music from the heart but I definitely enjoy all and is not one to shy away from a challenge…so Machel and Bunji lets talk, lol.

“I AM AN ALL-ROUNDER

I touch a little of everything. I love composing melodies and arranging and I do write and play the Drums.”

Arita has been singing professionally for a little over a year, but really all her life. As a young girl, she entered Calypso competitions when she was attending secondary school and would always participate in any activity once creativity was involved. So she was always really preparing to Sing.

“I am proud of every single one of my accomplishments”

“Being signed to TEMPO Records means a lot to me. As an artiste we need to understand that it is much more than talent or talent is not enough. My manager taught me this from day one and as we continue on this journey I realize it more and more.
TEMPO Networks in itself being the leading television Network and media Company for the Caribbean Music allows me a platform to expose my music in a very significant way.
HER INFLUENCES

Life, everyday we wake up knowing that we have a purpose to fulfill, when God decided to place us on this earth, he sent me to complete a job. This is to influence others with my music and through me as a person. The Good Lord is my main influence. Personally, I also have role models in my life that I am very grateful for that influence my thinking and approach to life, family and my own personal development.

“The Good Lord Is My Main Influence”

My musical influences are the greats, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Whitney Houston, etc. I am also influenced by the younger talent of Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Beyonce, etc

The soul of my music gravitates to generating a similar feeling. I am currently developing a sound that is mixed with that soul or blues vibes, but clearly Caribbean influenced.

Caribbean Music is my foundation particularly Calypso & Reggae Music, so I’m determined to make certain to make music for the international audience while continuing to bring forward the awesome sound of the Caribbean.

So, I am really an Artist that is not bound to any one genre, but in love with the sound of my heritage, while developing that sound that incorporates our super-compelling vibe, but touches everyone internationally.

“GOOD MUSIC IS GOOD MUSIC”

Soca is the Foundation, but Trinbagonian’s love music generally.

Once the beat, lyrics and vibe content connect with the audience, even the most passionate soca-lover will feel it. I’m not a reggae singer, per se, although I LOVE the genre, so coming from the land of Soca has not really been an issue. My intent is to make great music that people will appreciate and be inspired. Indeed, Trinidad does have a number of very talented reggae artistes, which shows that the culture is really one of music-lovers — Thankfully, my music has been well-received at home and is beginning to reach many different parts of the world and I am truly grateful for that.

COLLABORATIONS

“CRISIS” with Queen Ifrica

“I just released a collaboration with the great Queen Ifrica, a song called “Crisis” and it was amazing to collaborate on such a compelling track with this Artist that has been so influential as a female Caribbean Act”

I wish to travel the world with my music, with the opportunity to inspire persons from many cultures and backgrounds — with God’s grace, every Continent!

Collaborations are awesome & I look forward to many others — John Legend would be awesome!!

FIRST ALBUM IS COMING OUT THIS SUMMER!!

I am preparing my first Album scheduled to be released in the summer and I’m told it’s a Monster from persons who had the privilege to listen to it — (smile).

My new video for my song “Everything” is about to drop this week and I’m super-excited for that as well — it’s a beauty! It was shot in my home town of Chatham and exposes all of the beautiful images that make up my home. It was Produced and co-directed by Manager and shot by a group of extraordinarily talented Trinidadian videographers and cinematographers from Forward Focus Media Group. Keep it locked for that video and several others on the horizon.

Trinidad is the island of soca but there are Rastafarians and concious people that live here who don’t partake in carnival because its post slavery “culture”scandalous and sexual in nature…this is not Black culture.

“My passion is getting my brothers and sisters to open their mind to their factual history and truth!”

As a Rastafarian and reggae artiste in a society that based its “culture” on slackness and profit it’s only natural that any reggae artiste would have to work overtime to gain any recognition and respect in this big world.
